Confession of Faith and Pastoral Prayer

Confession of Faith: The 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, Chapter 8:1-2
1689 LBCF 8.1-2

Paragraph 1 It pleased God, in His eternal purpose, to choose and ordain the Lord Jesus, His only begotten Son, according to the covenant made between them both, to be the mediator between God and man;¹ the prophet,² priest,³ and king;⁴ head and savior of the church,⁵ the heir of all things,⁶ and judge of the world;⁷ unto whom He did from all eternity give a people to be His seed and to be by Him in time redeemed, called, justified, sanctified, and glorified.⁸

¹ Isaiah 42:1; 1 Peter 1:19-20. ² Acts 3:22. ³ Hebrews 5:5-6. ⁴ Psalm 2:6; Luke 1:33. ⁵ Ephesians 1:22-23. ⁶ Hebrews 1:2. ⁷ Acts 17:31. ⁸ Isaiah 53:10; John 17:6; Romans 8:30.

Paragraph 2 The Son of God, the second person in the Holy Trinity, being very and eternal God, the brightness of the Father's glory, of one substance and equal with Him who made the world, who upholds and governs all things He has made, did, when the fullness of time was complete, take upon Him man's nature, with all the essential properties and common infirmities of it,⁹ yet without sin;¹⁰ being conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary, the Holy Spirit coming down upon her, and the power of the Most High overshadowing her; and so was made of a woman of the tribe of Judah, of the seed of Abraham and David according to the Scriptures;¹¹ so that two whole, perfect, and distinct natures were inseparably joined together in one person, without conversion, composition, or confusion; which person is very God and very man, yet one Christ, the only mediator between God and man.¹²

⁹ John 1:14; Galatians 4:4. ¹⁰ Romans 8:3; Hebrews 2:14, 16-17; 4:15. ¹¹ Matthew 1:22-23; Luke 1:27, 31, 35. ¹² Romans 9:5; 1 Timothy 2:5.

Pastoral Prayer

Catechism Instruction

The 1680 Orthodox Catechism, Questions 135-137

Question 135: Why do Christians need to pray? Answer: Because prayer is the most important part of the thankfulness God requires of us.¹ And also because God gives his grace and Holy Spirit only to those who pray continually and groan inwardly, asking God for these gifts and thanking him for them.²

¹ Psalm 50:14-15; 116:12-19; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. ² Matthew 7:7-8; Luke 11:9-13.

Question 136: How does God want us to pray so that he will listen to us? Answer: First, we must pray from the heart to no other than the one true God, who has revealed himself in his Word, asking for everything he has commanded us to ask for.¹ Second, we must acknowledge our need and misery, hiding nothing, and humble ourselves in his majestic presence.² Third, we must rest on this unshakable foundation: even though we do not deserve it, God will surely listen to our prayer because of Christ our Lord. That is what he promised us in his Word.³

¹ Psalm 145:18-20; John 4:22-24; Romans 8:26-27; James 1:5; 1 John 5:14-15. ² 2 Chronicles 7:14; Psalm 2:11; 34:18; 62:8; Isaiah 66:2; Revelation 4. ³ Daniel 9:17-19; Matthew 7:8; John 14:13-14; 16:23; Romans 10:13; James 1:6.

Question 137: What did God command us to pray for? Answer: Everything we need, spiritually and physically,¹ in the prayer Christ our Lord himself taught us.

¹ James 1:17; Matthew 6:33.
