仇敌的另一个手段，就是密切窥探圣徒的生活。撒但是世上最厉害的情报探子。牠将打听你的倾向、思想、情感和计划，当成牠的日常工作。等牠掌握了这些信息后，就按着你的“软肋”来下手——牠看准了你的心往哪边游走，就在那里开口子，把试探的路给你铺出来，直到把你引向你情感最容易跌倒的地方。往往当你内心深处稍微一动，撒但就能嗅到你要往哪里走；因为总有某一种败坏的私欲，会在暗中当“内应”，把你出卖给牠，仿佛对牠说：“你要抓住这个人，就去他最忙、最属世的时候找他；他整个人都被今生的欲望和忧虑缠住了，深得脱不开身。”
若人的心偏爱“野心”这种私欲，撒但就会为那灵魂勾画各种诱人的蓝图。牠先用虚浮的盼望把人吹得自我膨胀，然后就很容易地把他拽进可怕的罪里。哈曼就是这样被牠唆使加速实施了那场血腥的阴谋：为了成为王的宠臣，哈曼不惜一切代价策划了迫害犹太人的行动，最终这阴谋也导致了他自己的灭亡（斯7:9-10）。
在对付那些敏感的灵魂时，撒但会采用一种极其隐秘的策略：牠表现得十分“谦和”，起初只求一点点。牠深知，如果一次性索要全部，很可能会被拒绝，但通过多次小小的要求，牠最终能得到原本不可能立刻到手的东西。牠就是这样钻进夏娃心里的：起初牠并不敢直接怂恿夏娃吃果子，因为牠知道那样大胆的挑衅极可能把她吓跑。于是，牠先抛出一个挑衅性的问题，这为牠以“人类大仇敌”的身份登场做了铺垫：“神岂是真说？”换句话说：“你确定没弄错吗？你看神多么慷慨，园中别的树你都能吃，祂为什么要禁掉最好的一棵呢？”就这样，撒但先在夏娃信心的根基周围四处挖掘，使根基松动，直等到下一阵试探的风暴刮来时，那棵树就更容易倒下了。

Another of the enemy’s methods is to spy on the saint’s affairs. Satan is the greatest intelligence agent in the world. He makes it his business to inquire into your inclinations, thoughts, affections, and plans. Then he sets to work accordingly—finding which way the stream goes, opening the passage of temptation, and cutting the channel to the fall of your affections. You can scarcely stir out of the closet of your heart without Satan knowing your destination. Some corrupt passion or other will betray your soul and be the informer to Satan, saying to him, “If you want to surprise such a one, you will find him in the wood of worldly employment, up to his ears in the desires and cares of this life.”
Is ambition the lust the heart favors? Such pleasing projects he will put that soul upon! How easily, having first blown him up with vain hopes, he draws him into horrid sins. This is how he hurried Haman, who was willing to do anything to become the prince’s favorite, into that bloody plot against the Jews, fatal at last to himself (Esther 7:9–10).
In his approaches to a sensitive soul, Satan uses an especially subtle strategy. When he comes to tempt, he is modest and asks for just a little. He knows he may get through several askings what he would be denied if he asked all at once. This is how he wriggled into Eve’s bosom. He did not dare her to eat the fruit at first. He knew she would probably be frightened away by such a bold challenge. Instead, he asked a provocative question which would set the stage for his debut as man’s archenemy: “Hath God said?”In other words, “Are you sure you are not mistaken? You know how generous God is! He lets you eat everything else in the Garden; why would He deny you the best of all?” Thus he digs about and loosens the root of her faith, and then the tree falls more easily with the next gust of temptation.
